Cleaning Up Town!

100_0037.jpg

At Durnacol Skills Innovation Hub we are serious about safety and keeping the environment clean. We believe we can share this passion with our students. Clean environments ensure good housekeeping thus keeping our safety standards high. We trust that our students will one day implement the same values and attitude at their future workplace.

We recently invited our students to join us in an effort to clean up town. The fact that they didnt have to sit in class for three hours made it a very attractive thought and it was not long before they were all in the streets of Durnacol.

Gino White from Arcelor Mittal - Saldanha supporting our blood drive

Four times a year DSIH invites the Newcastle Blood Bank to visit our premises to give our students and staff the opportunity to "make a difference".

Previous visits from the Newcastle SANBS, including our latest visit were a huge success and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students and staff who supported the blood drive thus giving the gift of life.

3 Stars for Durnacol Skills Innovation Hub

Nosa.JPG

As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering a quality and safe service to both learners and clients, Durnacol Skills Innovation Hub applied for their first NOSA safety grading audit.

We have occupied our new premises for 8 months and audits are usually conducted after 12 months, and we were informed that the maximum grading that we could achieve would be 3 stars. We feel so strongly about the need for a safe and conducive learning environment however that we decided to go ahead any way.

The first bunch of students was enrolled at Durnacol Skills Innovation Hub on February 02.

Although under intense renovations, the Hub boasts a ‘unique’ campus life, which draws together the lost mining tales infused in a quiet social intercourse.

The Hub is registered with the Department of Education and is accredited by the Education and Training Quality Assurance and Umalusi, among some.

The rebirth of historic Durnacol

■ By Ayanda
Northern KwaZulu-Natal Courier
27 January 2009

When the Durnacol mine finally closed its doors in the late 1990's; the community was left devastated. Grown men cried as thousands of people lost their jobs.

However, the community of Durnacol refused to let this once vibrant village that boomed with economic activity turn into a ghost town. Hence the establishment of the Durnacol Skills Innovation Hub.

The Hub is established by Blue Horison Properties 53 (Pty) Ltd, in partnership with Exxaro, previously known as Kumba (Iscor) and the Durnacol Community Forum (DCF).
